Women making the transition from incarceration to work face many challenges. First and foremost, many are returning to mainstream society with few if any skills, and often with financial burdens stemming from fines levied by the Court. These women often begin this transition without the support systems in place to help them navigate this major life change. EFFIS provides this support system and promotes confidence and professionalism by providing women in transition with services and resources that are vital to their success in the workforce. Resources such as an Internet-accessible computer lab with cutting-edge job placement software; job search assistance; résumé and cover-letter-writing lessons; and both interview preparation and mock interviews – to help them effectively answer questions about their past. Without this support estimates indicate approximately 60% of these individuals are re-arrested within three to five years.
EFFIS offers members a safe and nurturing atmosphere in which they can share, grow and network with other women who are making, or have recently made, the same transition into the workforce. The program is open to women who have been referred to Dress for Success Cincinnati and who are making the transition from prison to the workplace. Workshops with volunteers with current professional workforce expertise are scheduled weekly, and one-on-one career coaching sessions are available either on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Once these women are employed for 30 days they are also invited to join the Professional Women’s Group. Workshops are offered on Tuesday and Thursday each week.
