The Unofficial Guide to Everyday Gratitude (Because Adulting is Hard)

The following was written by Shelby C. Pressley, QMHS, Owner of Ever-Evolving Wellness, LLC. Shelby has worked with our clients many times, offering her expertise is sessions on well-being and thriving in life and at work. This month, she discusses gratitude in our everyday lives.

Let’s be honest, the “attitude of gratitude” can sometimes feel a bit…cheesy, right? We’re told to be grateful for the big things: health, family, a roof over our heads. And yes, those are super important. But what about the real stuff? The tiny, chaotic, slightly annoying things that make up our daily lives?

True, everyday gratitude is about acknowledging the small wins that prevent total anarchy. It’s about reframing those “ugh” moments into “oh, thank goodness” moments. So, grab a lukewarm coffee you forgot about an hour ago (be grateful you have coffee at all!) and let’s dive into the hilarious reality of modern thankfulness.

  1. The Divine Intervention of Deodorant

Forget the abstract concepts of well-being; let’s talk hygiene. Have you ever run out of deodorant? It’s a quick trip back to the less-than-charming reality of our natural state.

Gratitude thought: Thank goodness for the inventor of antiperspirant. And for the fact that I remembered to put it on before that 9 AM meeting. You’re welcome, coworkers.

  1. The Mighty Elastic Waistband

In a world of rigid expectations and even more rigid denim, the elastic waistband is a beacon of hope. Whether for a large meal (Hello Thanksgiving leftovers) or just general comfort, this unsung hero asks for nothing, but gives everything.

Gratitude thought: Thank you, elastic – for not judging my life choices or my fourth slice of pizza. You’re the real MVP.

  1. The Toilet Paper Revelation

This one’s a classic, but for good reason. It’s a commodity we completely take for granted until that fateful moment of truth. The moment you realize you’re on the last square, and the backup roll is in a different zip code.

Gratitude thought: A moment of silence for the existence of toilet paper, in ample supply. The alternatives are simply not my idea of a good time.

  1. When the WiFi Actually Works

Ah, the modern necessity!  We expect flawless, high-speed internet like we expect the sun to rise. But when the signal is strong and the streaming doesn’t buffer, that’s a small miracle in the digital age.

Gratitude thought: Thank you, invisible waves of data, for keeping me entertained and connected. My sanity (and my Netflix addiction) thank you.

The Takeaway

Practicing gratitude doesn’t mean you have to be a happy-go-lucky person all the time. It just means taking a second to notice the things that aren’t going wrong. It’s about finding the humor and the hidden blessings in the mundane.

So today, be grateful for your opposable thumbs (they do a lot of heavy lifting), the fact that your car started this morning, and for that one sock that somehow made it through the wash cycle and didn’t disappear into the dryer abyss.

Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes frustrating, but it’s also full of these weird, wonderful things that make the whole circus run. And for that, I’m grateful. Cheers to the little things, friends!
