Leading with Purpose: Honoring Women’s Equality Day and Our Mission

The following blog was written by Xaviera Edwards, Dress for Success Cincinnati’s new board chair.

I am honored to introduce myself as the new Board Chair for Dress for Success Cincinnati. Serving this organization is both a privilege and a personal passion. My journey with Dress for Success began years ago as a volunteer in the career center, where I witnessed firsthand the powerful impact this organization has on the lives of women in our community. From that very first experience, I knew this was a mission I wanted to be part of in a bigger way.

I’ve long admired how Dress for Success empowers women with not only professional attire, but also confidence, career development, and a community of support. To now lead our board in advancing that mission is incredibly meaningful.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor, advocate for, and walk alongside women from all backgrounds, many of whom simply needed someone to see their potential. That’s what Dress for Success does so beautifully. We meet women where they are, celebrate their strengths, and help them take the next step forward, whether it’s entering the workforce, navigating a career change, or stepping into leadership.

My new role begins at a time of reflection and celebration, as we approach Women’s Equality Day on August 26. This day commemorates the adoption of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. It’s a landmark moment in history, but also a reminder that equality is an ongoing pursuit.

At Dress for Success, we see firsthand that equality means more than having a seat at the table. It means having the confidence to use your voice. It means access to opportunity, the tools to succeed, and the dignity that comes from being seen, heard, and supported. That’s the work we do every day—and it’s what makes this mission so powerful.

When a woman walks through our doors, she isn’t just coming in for clothes. She’s preparing for an interview. She’s building her resume. She’s reclaiming her story. And through our programs and the unwavering commitment of our team, volunteers, and partners, she’s stepping into her next chapter with purpose.

I step into this leadership role with deep gratitude—for those who have led before me, for the passionate community that surrounds this organization, and for every woman we serve. Together, we are not just dressing women for success, we are opening doors and shaping a more equitable future.

As we honor Women’s Equality Day, I encourage each of us to think about the role we play in championing equity and empowering women. Whether you give your time, your voice, or your resources, you are part of a movement that changes lives.

I’m excited to be on this journey with all of you. Together, we will continue building a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive, and where success is always within reach. Xaviera Edwards Board Chair, Dress for Success Cincinnati
